Kosa Melanka- Ukrainian New Year's Feast & Fundraiser

  • Church of the Holy Protection of the Mother of God 30 Leeds Street Toronto, ON, M6G 3R8 Canada (map)

Join us for our annual "Melanka" ~ Ukrainian New Year's Party & Folk Camp Fundraiser

The Eastern European holiday tradition of celebrating the feast of "Melanka" and welcoming in the New Year is observed throughout the world, and especially in diaspora communities with a big fancy bash. We bring the party back to its roots, with a night of feasting, caroling, and dancing to traditional music; We invite you to join us in remembering old ways, savouring colourful Ukrainian customs, and meeting new friends on the dancefloor.

Enjoy a generous meal with traditional Ukrainian dishes with a fresh modern take prepared by Folk Camp chef Lizzie Shipman and her team, featuring seasonal and local ingredients sourced with care.

Melanka is a time of dress up and mummery, caroling and making fun. Hear the Kosa Koliadnyky (Carolers) sing traditional koliadky (carols) from Christmas to New Year's, and join in the fun. Come dressed in your festive folk wear and bring a mask, or borrow one of Kosa Kolektiv's masks for the night.

After the feasting & singing, the "zabava" (party) will kick off with Polky Village Band playing traditional dance tunes from Ukraine and Poland. If you don't know how to dance, they'll teach you! Stephania Woloshyn and Ala Stasiuk will lead simple, accessible, and fun folk dances everybody can partake in. Zabava-only tickets are available for the dance portion of the night, 9:30pm-12:30am.

Visit the event page on Facebook to see a detailed schedule. Share the event with friends, and let others know you'll be going. The more the merrier!
